On Monday, George Floyd died under the knee of a police officer in Minneapolis, Minnesota. In their police report, officers wrote that he died of a "medical incident" after resisting arrest. Video footage quickly clarified that the "medical incident" was actually a brutal killing in front of a street full of citizens who were pleading police officers to stop.
George Floyd did not deserve to die. Breonna Taylor did not deserve to die. Ahmaud Arbery did not deserve to die. These Americans, their families, and black and brown communities deserve justice. Our country has to do better.
In our neighborhoods, and around the nation, we still have a lot of work to do in building stronger, safer communities for everyone.
Accountability is a critical first step. Will you join me in demanding justice for George Floyd?
We must work to dismantle the broken institutions that allow white supremacy and police brutality to run rampant. We must listen when communities cry out for justice and accountability. And the President of the United States won’t divide us by adding fuel to the fire with his insensitive comments.
We must demand justice.
