A bill that would repeal the state ban on local rent control ordinances has passed the Senate Health and Public Affairs Committee by a 6-3 party line vote. It now faces another challenge in the Senate Judiciary Committee where resistance is expected to be steeper. Please contact the Senators in the committee asking them to vote yes on SB216!
It is also encouraged that people express their support in public comment at the upcoming hearing, tentatively scheduled for Tuesday at 1:30PM though this time is likely to change. In-person comments in favor of the bill are likely to be capped at five but more can make comments via zoom. We will do our best to keep people up to date as the committee schedule changes.
A bill which bans discrimination based on source of income in housing has passed the House and is headed for a vote in the Senate. Please contact your state senator asking them to vote yes. This legislation would grant statewide protections to tenants who are refused housing for utilizing housing vouchers and rental assistance or are on a fixed income. Additionally, tenants relying on such means of paying rent would have the power to hold landlords accountable for unfair treatment due these circumstances.

A bill establishing  "THE IMMIGRANT SAFETY ACT"

prohibiting any public body from entering into agreements used to detain individuals for federal immigration violations. It would also call of any current agreements in place, to be terminated.

A bill creating "THE CONSUMER INFORMATION AND DATA PROTECTION ACT". This Act would help protect our consumer data while providing exceptions for investigative authorities some access.

Local Solar Access Fund, is a proposed grant fund at the New Mexico Finance Authority, which will issue both planning and implementation grants to Tribes, Counties, Municipalities, School Districts, and Land Grants for solar and storage projects to power public buildings like community centers, libraries, schools, and fire stations, and infrastructure like water, wastewater, and street lighting.

Planning includes procuring grant writers and technical expertise to plan and fund projects, and implementation includes funding construction, purchase, installation, and equipment of solar energy and storage systems.

The fund is sponsored by House Majority Leader Reena Szczepanski, Senator Harold Pope, and Representative Patricia Roybal Caballero. It will be established in law with a one-time, non-recurring, non-reverting appropriation of $60 million.

"Our right to privacy is eroding at an alarming rate, as privacy protections have not kept pace with the rapidly evolving surveillance technologies.

With the Trump administration promising to target journalists, protesters, and political adversaries, use police powers against immigrant communities, expand surveillance of private citizens, and restrict bodily autonomy, strengthening privacy protections in New Mexico has become urgent." - ACLUNM
