Dear friend,
Twenty years ago today, I began leading MapLight as our first staff member. Much has changed in our country and world over these two decades. Yet MapLight’s commitment to exposing money's influence on politics, to strengthen our democracy, has been unwavering.
Jaleh Bisharat, Thomas Layton, and I co-founded MapLight to improve our broken U.S. political system. Like so many Americans, we were fed up with a system where elected officials prioritize campaign donors over voters. We built innovative databases of money in politics that provide critical information for democracy – information that allows the public, civic groups, and the press to see the influences on our government, promote reform, and hold our elected officials accountable.
We are proud to be expanding transparency and improving democracy, even as these values are under threat. Over the last five years, MapLight has expanded our work to serve states and cities. We created the MapLight Disclosure System, a modern and powerful suite of campaign finance, lobbying, and ethics software that makes money and politics information transparent to the public. MapLight’s software is now used by the State of California, State of Maine, and the cities of Denver and Minneapolis, with more states and cities to come. We will continue to pursue our goal of transparent money in politics information throughout America.
I’m deeply grateful for your enthusiasm and support throughout these two decades. It is only because of supporters like you that we can keep shining a light on money and influence, to make our democracy work for everyone– for now and for decades to come.
With gratitude,
Dan Newman
President & Co-Founder
