For the past few years, Rights Action has been supporting fundraising efforts for Milagro Sala and fellow leaders of the Tupac Amaru Organization, from Jujuy, Argentina. They are being persecuted in a typical case of "lawfare" in which the political power, the judiciary, and the mainstream media work together to silence, vilify, criminalize and imprison opposition leaders.
We received sad news recently of the passing of our dear friend Jose Maria Novielo.
From Argentina himself, he has been a leading proponent of this campaign - together with some other Argentinian companeros and companeras - in support of the Free Milagro Sala Committee. Jose Maria was himself a political prisoner for many years in the brutal jails of the U.S. and Western-backed military regime of the "Argentinian Generals" in the 1970s and early 80s.
It has been an honor for Rights Action to get to know Jose Maria, and do our small part in support of this work. We send our heartfelt sympathies and respect to Jose Maria's family and loved ones, near and far.
