It’s Public Schools Week, a time to honor the importance of public schools as a unifying force in our diverse society. One important way to defend public education and church-state separation is to reject private school voucher schemes.

President Trump and his allies in Congress are plotting to create the nation’s first federally funded, nationwide private school voucher program. Trump signed an executive order aimed at manipulating federal programs to fund private school vouchers, and leaders in Congress are pushing legislation that would give away $100 billion in public money over the next ten years to fund private school tuition. These schemes would divert critical funds away from our public schools, which 90% of American children attend, to pay for tuition for only a few select students, many of whom already attend private schools.

There are so many reasons to oppose vouchers ([link removed]). Private school vouchers divert desperately needed public resources away from our public schools to fund tuition at private, mostly religious schools. Vouchers don’t improve student achievement and lack basic accountability and oversight standards. And private voucher schools often discriminate against students with disabilities, LGBTQ+ students, students from minority religions, and nonreligious students.

Friend, Christian Nationalists are trying to use the machinery of the state to impose their religious beliefs on all of our children – and to get taxpayers to fund it. Not on our watch. We’re fighting back to ensure that public dollars fund public schools that welcome all students. But we need your help – your representatives and senators need to hear from you.
