This week, I issued a proclamation expanding additional services and activities that can open under Phase II.
Water parks, recreational sports programs for adults, driver education programs, and food-court dining areas within shopping malls can begin operations with limited occupancy this week.

PROVIDING AN UPDATE ON COVID-19 SURGE RESPONSE IN AMARILLO

On Wednesday, I visited Amarillo to meet with local officials and give an update on our COVID-19 surge response in Potter and Randall counties.
The State of Texas has implemented a strategy that enables Texans to get back to work while mitigating further spread of COVID-19. Amarillo is an example of this strategy in action. Surge response teams will continue to respond to and contain any hot spots that arise.
During the press conference, I also outlined the data

showing hospitalizations, testing, fatalities, and positivity rates. This data demonstrates the effectiveness of these surge response teams.
The success of these surge response teams will allow more Texans to get back to work safely and strategically.
TEXAS HAD THE FEWEST COVID-19 FATALITIES SINCE THE END OF MARCH

On Monday, the Lone Star State had the fewest COVID-19 fatalities since the end of March, and the fewest COVID-19 hospitalizations since the middle of April.
Texas also has the second most recoveries from COVID-19 in America.
We are continuing to rely on data and our team of doctors to safely and strategically open Texas while protecting public health.
DSHS DISTRIBUTES ANTIVIRAL DRUG THROUGHOUT TEXAS TO TREAT COVID-19

The Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) is distributing three cases of an antiviral drug, Remdesivir, to two hospitals in Lubbock.
DSHS is partnering with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) to distribute this drug across the state.
Not only will this drug help treat patients throughout the Lone Star State, but it will better bolster our mitigation and treatment efforts in communities experiencing surges in COVID-19 cases.
CVS HEALTH OPENING 44 NEW COVID-19 TESTING SITES ACROSS TEXAS

CVS Health will open 44 new COVID-19 testing sites at select CVS Pharmacy drive-thru locations in Texas.
CVS Health plans to establish over 80 drive-thru testing sites across the state by the end of May.

DPS BEGINS PHASED OPENING OF DRIVER LICENSE OFFICES

The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) will begin a phased opening of driver license offices this week with limited service offerings.

HHSC RECEIVES $3.6M TO CONNECT NURSING HOMES AND FAMILIES

This week, the Texas Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC) announced $3.6M in funding for nursing facilities to purchase tablets, webcams, and headphones to help residents safely connect with their loved ones during the COVID-19 pandemic while at the same time protecting our most vulnerable populations.

EXPANDING TESTING TO ALL RESIDENTS IN STATE SUPPORTED LIVING CENTERS

In conjunction with HHSC, we are expanding testing to ALL residents and employees in our state supported living centers.
This ongoing partnership with HHSC will help expand testing capabilities and will better equip the state to identify and mitigate the potential spread of this virus to protect our most vulnerable population.
NCAA APPROVES RESUMED ACTIVITIES FOR CERTAIN SPORTS

Some good news for sports: The NCAA will allow college football and men's and women's basketball activities to resume on June 1st.
This is a good first step to resuming college sports this fall.

We mourn the loss of a great Texan, but we also remember the tremendous life and the legacy he leaves behind.
Congressman Sam Johnson was a fearless patriot and an American hero, and we are incredibly proud and fortunate to have called him a fellow Texan.
