In this interview, Reid Davenport, director of the Sundance award-winning documentary Life After, says, "We were more interested in understanding whether assisted dying laws, as they are currently legislated in the U.S. for terminally ill people, could be susceptible to becoming a slippery slope. And we also wanted to unpack the ways that our cultural fear of disability (and our deep-seated societal values of independence and productivity) is contributing to how terminally ill folks are already using that legislation."

Preventing Assisted Suicide in Maryland

"The practical application of these laws is that someone will qualify if they would die within six months without treatment. That's why a doctor in Colorado justified, and faced no penalty for, writing lethal prescriptions for young women with anorexia.  Despite mental health conditions not being a qualifying condition, the doctor has faced no consequences," said Jessica Rodgers, Coalitions Director of the Patients' Rights Action Fund.

Assisted Suicide Will Undermine Suicide Prevention

"A group of 24 experts said they were “alarmed” by the speed with which the legislation was being pushed through parliament and that it should be 'overwhelmingly rejected.' They argued that the bill could put pressure on patients who were lonely or grieving, or felt like a burden, to take their own lives instead of accessing psychological or psychiatric support.
