The Trump Chaos continues. This week Donald Trump started a trade war with some of our closest global allies (Canada, Mexico, and China), announcing he will instate a 10-25% tariff on all goods being imported to the United States. [1] While the start time for the Canada and Mexico tariffs keeps moving, Trump has shown no attempt to rethink this cost-raising tactic—doubling down and saying he will impose tariffs on Europe as well and owning up to the fact that Americans will feel the economic pain of his tantrum. [2]

This means one thing for you and me: Rising costs!

Eggs, shoes, fuel, avocados, beer, construction supplies…the cost of everything just went way up thanks to Donald Trump!

Our families, our small businesses, and our economy can’t afford the Trump Chaos!

Here’s what’s going on: Donald Trump promised American families he would lower our costs but he hasn’t been in office for even a month and he has already started an unnecessary, costly bullying trade war and is sticking our families with the bill—to the tune of $830 per household! [3] Over the weekend, he announced a 25% tariff on imports from Canada and Mexico and a 10% tariff on imports from China. There are no exemptions for specific industries—so most goods in the U.S. are about to get more expensive. [4] 

Tariffs are taxes on foreign imports that are paid by the U.S. businesses importing those products. Businesses then pass the cost of those tariffs on to consumers—you, me, and all our neighbors. 

What does the Trump Tariff War on Families mean for you, me, our families, and our economy?

• Trump’s tariffs will increase the cost of everything we buy. Eggs, fruit, vegetables, gas, shoes, electronics, beer, tequila, home construction supplies, toys…literally everything! Trump is inflicting a tax on every American household. Businesses big and small will have no other option than to pass the cost of these tariffs directly on to us.

• According to the Tax Foundation Trump’s reckless tariffs will increase household costs by as much as $830 to $1,200 a year while doing nothing to protect American jobs or manufacturing. [5]

• Our economy will suffer, along with our families. Not only will these tariffs immediately drive up prices for gas, groceries, and housing, but they will cost American workers their jobs and put supply chains for everyday goods under immense pressure. A tariff of this size and magnitude could lead to major job layoffs and even a recession. [6]

We don’t ring this alarm lightly. And we’re not the only ones deeply concerned about the Trump tariff chaos. Even the U.S. Chamber of Commerce warned that tariffs threaten to “upend supply chains” and raise prices for American families. [7]

What can Congress do? Trump and his protectors in Congress are raising significant costs on families and throwing our economy into chaos when much more level-headed options are available to strengthen our economy and bring jobs and manufacturing back to the U.S. Our elected leaders should be cracking down on price gouging, fixing our tax code to benefit families and small businesses, investing in U.S. infrastructure, building more products at home, and investing in American workers with union protections, child care investments, paid family and medical leave, and quality health care. Instead, Trump is giving us higher prices and lower wages and giving new tax cuts to billionaires and mega-corporations. 

The time for real, level-headed leadership is now! Trump’s tariffs will hurt families across the nation–regardless of your zip code or political party. SIGN our letter to your U.S. Senators and Representative now and then share this email with your friends and family so they can sign as well.
