Statement on Indonesia’s Independence Day

August 17, 2019 - Ottawa, Ontario - Global Affairs Canada

The Honourable Chrystia Freeland, Minister of Foreign Affairs, today issued the following statement in recognition of Indonesia’s Independence Day:

“Today, we join the people of Indonesia and the Indonesian-Canadian community in celebration of Indonesia’s Independence Day.

“Since establishing diplomatic ties in 1952, Canada and Indonesia have developed close relations. Our strong people-to-people connections and growing commercial relationship is important to Canada. Indonesia ranks among Canada’s largest trading partners in Southeast Asia, with bilateral trade between the two countries worth nearly $4 billion.

“Our countries must continue to work together to champion pluralism, democracy and diversity, as well as the rules-based international order. The future of the Canada-Indonesia partnership is bright, and we look forward to expanding our already robust bilateral and multilateral relationship.”
