Folks, I want you to know that I will always be honest with you, even when the truth sucks. All weekend, I thought about what I wanted to say to you today as I watched a steady flood of insane breaking news stories come across my phone. And here’s the truth: I’m freaked out. We are smack dab in the middle of a constitutional crisis. We could all see it coming, but being in the middle of it is something else. It’s like the difference between a tornado warning and an F5 smashing into your house.
We are stuck in the basement together, you and I, trying to ride this thing out. We don’t know what will be left of the United States—our home—when the clouds clear and we rise up from the depths. I don’t know, you don’t know. All I know with certainty is that I am not giving up. Never surrender is my motto now. This is our country too, and I don’t take kindly to anyone fucking around with it, foreign, domestic, or South African wannabe Martian.
Tomorrow night, I’m opening up a Substack Chat [ [link removed] ] for all subscribers, and we’re gonna talk about this. Everything has shifted, and now we’re the radical outsiders fighting for America in our own ways. What is the “bright side” right now? How can we fight in ways that honor the social contract and our commitment to democracy while staying sane? Let’s be there for each other, share ideas, and maybe share some laughs. I’ll be on at 8pm ET. Hope you’ll join me.
FREE SPEECH, MY A$$. According to Kyle Griffin [ [link removed] ], more than 8,000 web pages across more than a dozen U.S. government websites have been taken down since Friday afternoon, per a NYT analysis [ [link removed] ]. The purges have removed information about vaccines, veterans' care, hate crimes, and scientific research, among many other topics.
These guys ran on a free speech platform, complaining that too much government information is politicized. Someone remind them that information being scrubbed for political reasons is also a violation of free speech. Duh.
BOBBY & TULSI ADVANCE. RFK Jr. [ [link removed] ] and Tulsi Gabbard [ [link removed] ] were advanced out of committee for a full Senate confirmation vote. Kennedy even earned the support of Sen. Bill Cassidy, a medical doctor, who had a chance to be a hero. More proof that Congress is a dying institution.
If we had a healthy legislative branch right now, Elon Musk [ [link removed] ] would have been hauled in front of Congress by now and asked questions under oath. There’d be immediate hearings and congressional oversight. But that’s if we currently had the legislative branch our Founders envisioned. We don’t. And no one knows it and benefits from it more than King Donald.
BLAME REPUBLICANS. I give the Democrats a lot of hell in this newsletter, so in the interests of fairness, let’s just say it: the GOP is a flaming pile of trash. When I publicly turned against Trump over six years ago, I thought a bunch of my fellow Republicans would join/follow me. When I challenged Trump in the 2020 GOP presidential primary, again, I expected to get support from some in my former party. Boy, was I fucking naive.
The history of this era will be of a tyrant who turned an American political party into an authoritarian-embracing cult. And of virtually EVERY member of that party who knew better, but meekly fell in line. And the very few of us Republicans in exile who didn’t fall in line will be an afterthought.
A CONSTITUTIONAL CRISIS. A king in the White House, utterly unrestrained and above the law. A party in control of Congress, utterly devoted to the king, and not the Constitution. An unelected oligarch, the king’s patron, firing federal employees and taking control of federal databases.
Yes, folks, this is a constitutional crisis.
So what the hell can we do?
We’re going to talk about that tomorrow night in Substack Chat. Please join us! In the meantime, catch my latest video. If you can’t see it, join our community (and help me keep a fact-checker gainfully employed!) by upgrading to a paid subscription [ [link removed] ]...
