Unclaimed property refers to any financial asset that has been inactive for an extended period of time. When a business or entity is unable to contact the rightful owner, the property is turned over to the State Treasurer’s Office where it is safeguarded until the owner or heir is found.
Examples of unclaimed property include: forgotten savings or checking accounts; lost utility refunds or deposits; lost stocks, dividends and bonds; uncashed insurance benefits and payroll checks; and abandoned safe deposit box contents.
