A Message from Gabe:

Greetings Rhode Islanders,

Earlier this week, President Trump issued an executive order that would freeze hundreds of billions of dollars in federal funding. This congressionally approved spending included money for families, small businesses, Head Start providers, community health centers, and more. The move was chaotic, confusing, and deeply harmful to hardworking Americans — which is why Rhode Island Attorney General Peter Neronha alongside 21 other state Attorneys General acted and a federal judge temporarily stopped this dangerous freeze. The uncertainty caused by the Trump Administration continues to have real consequences and demonstrates their priority to cut funding from essential programs.

What Does This Mean for You?
This funding freeze caused real confusion and could have real consequences for Rhode Islanders, including:
  • Higher Costs for Families – funding to nonprofits that work with programs that help families afford food, childcare, and housing—like the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children, the Emergency Food Assistance Program, Head Start, and rental assistance—were put on hold.

  • Cuts to Veterans Care – Federal grants that support Veterans health care and critical services like housing was interrupted.
  • Reduced Support for Small Businesses – Federal loans and disaster relief programs for entrepreneurs and small business owners would have been delayed or cut off.

  • Threats to Health Care and Public Safety – Federal grant funding that supports community health centers, payments to medical providers, police, firefighters, and emergency responders was threatened.

  • Stalled Infrastructure Projects – Road repairs, important infrastructure projects like the Washington Bridge and Route 95, energy upgrades are facing uncertainty, risking construction furloughs, delaying safety improvements, and slowing economic growth.

The Constitution is clear: the President cannot undue what Congress has decided how federal dollars are spent. I stand with Rhode Islanders who suffer the consequences of reckless moves like the ones we experienced this past week. That's why I visited Head Start provider Children's Friend in Providence where so many families benefit from this critical work. If this uncertainty has affected you — whether it's through lost benefits, stalled projects, or delayed assistance — please share your story or reach out to our district office at 401-729-5600 or email [email protected]. Our team is here to help.

Rhode Islanders work too hard to have their future put on hold because of power grabs that harm our communities. While this attempt was unsuccessful, I don't anticipate it will be the last. I will continue to work to ensure Rhode Islanders don't bear the brunt of these types of wrongheaded policy decisions. I look forward to being in touch with you as we respond to any additional actions from the administration.

Sincerely,

Image Thank you to the Jewish Alliance of Greater Rhode Island and the Sandra Bornstein Holocaust Education Center for inviting me to speak on Holocaust Remembrance Day.

I am working in Congress to combat antisemitism and hate in all its forms. As we reflect, we must learn from the past to confront hate wherever we find it.

Image As a member of the House Committee on the Budget, I am focused on supporting small businesses and making sure they can grow their footprint and create jobs in our community. That is why I visited the Brickle Group, a third-generation family-owned manufacturer in Woonsocket, to discuss how my work in Congress can best support their operations in the textile and fiber recycling industry.

Image At a summit hosted by Oceantic Network, I discussed my work in Congress to protect Rhode Island's gains as a leader in offshore wind — including hundreds of family-sustaining jobs that do not require a college degree and progress on climate action to build a better clean energy future.

Image I visited the Bristol Art Museum for “Parallel Threads: Entangled Ends,” a bi-national exhibit led by Rhode Islander Deborah Baronas and Australian historian Dr. Janis Hanley to speak on my work in Congress to support our legacy of textile manufacturing.

Image In the 125th year of Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) service to Veterans, I was honored to join VFW-Rhode Island to speak on my work in Congress and honor the Patriot’s Pen and Voice of Democracy Youth Scholarship winners.

I am grateful for our Veterans’ sacrifices for our freedoms and the inspiration they continue to provide for our young leaders.

Rhode Island Delegation Works to Prevent Delays on Critical Infrastructure Projects

Image

Congressman Amo speaking about the importance of federal funding to complete key infrastructure projects in Rhode Island.

The President’s recent actions had a significant impact on Rhode Island’s infrastructure and economy. He ordered a freeze on billions of dollars in federal infrastructure grants—including over $600 million that Rhode Island was awarded for critical transportation projects. That includes more than $220 million needed to fix the Washington Bridge.

I joined our state's congressional delegation to push the Trump Administration to immediately release these funds. We cannot afford delays that hurt workers, strain state and local budgets, and slow down Rhode Island's economy.
