Newsletter February 2025

Dear Friends,

In times of global crises and political upheaval, love and solidarity stand as enduring beacons of hope. In this spirit, our online magazine GEGENÜBER has just launched a new edition focused on "Solidarity & Universalism", exploring how we can stand together and strengthen communities.
Complementing this theme, we are excited to present our digital film series ALLES LIEBE. Featuring one film per month throughout the year, the series invites you to explore the many dimensions of love—whether in romantic relationships, unconventional bonds, or acts of loyalty, care, and friendship. In a world often overshadowed by division, these stories highlight love as a unifying force, transcending words and inspiring connection.

Sincerely,

Klaus Krischok
Director Goethe-Institut Washington
Regional Director North America

Solidarity and Universalism

Gegenüber Magazine: Double Exposure

In today's individualized societies, there is a tension between solidarity and universalism. The challenge is to respect diversity and individual freedom without losing a sense of shared responsibility and belonging. Only this double exposure makes it possible for people to stand up for each other in solidarity and respect universal values despite their differences.

Alles Liebe

The film series Alles Liebe (EN: Lots of Love) aims to counter the bad news with a ray of hope, at least cinematically and explores the most beautiful feeling in the world in very different facets.
Over twelve months, the series lets us share love stories and shows how people find each other and stand up for each other across dividing lines. In February, we offer the 1978 GDR coming-of-age drama "Sieben Sommersprossen" (EN: Seven Freckles).

80th Anniversary of the Liberation of the Death Camp Auschwitz

The Blind Spot in the Heart of Dresden

In the shadows of history, the tragic fate of hundreds of Jews deported from Dresden’s Alter Leipziger Bahnhof has been largely forgotten – until now. André Lang, Holger Knaak, and their dedicated team are working to make the old train station a prominent place of memory culture and to establish a space where Jewish history and life can be honored. Dresden journalist Andreas Roth sat down with Lang and Knaak to discuss their mission to preserve memory and foster connection.
