John –
I know that recent days have been full of fear, confusion, chaos, and real damage to our communities as we've watched Donald Trump's second term begin. We've seen domestic terrorists who attacked the Capitol pardoned and funding for schools, Medicaid, veterans, housing assistance, and much more put into dangerous limbo.
But this week, we got one of our first concrete signs since November that people are mobilizing and working to fight back against Republican extremism — right here in the Midwest. In a special election for Iowa's 35th Senate District (which voted for Trump by 21 points just two months ago) Democrat Mike Zimmer pulled off an astounding victory.
Mike campaigned as a proud champion of public education, while his opponent (who had a long history of anti-vaccine advocacy) took the race for granted and hoped that the support of white nationalist Steve King would seal the deal. In the end, voters chose common-sense policies that lift up their neighbors over lies and self-serving politics.
This result should be a reminder to everyone that when we fight for our shared values and offer ways to improve people's lives, we can win anywhere. (I'm also on a personal level very thrilled to see this outcome in part of the congressional seat that I used to represent!)
If this week's election is even a partial indicator of how voters are shifting, it means the Midwest is chock-full of opportunities for us to flip seats. And now — in these early days of the new administration and new Congress — is when it's critical to explain the stakes and establish a narrative that can carry us into 2026.
I'm excited about what Midwest Majority PAC can do in the weeks and months ahead. But it won't be possible without grassroots supporters like you. Will you pitch in today so we can lay the groundwork for big victories?
More soon,
Dave Loebsack
Iowa Congressman (2007-2021)
