Yesterday, Kash Patel – Trump's nominee to serve as FBI Director – had his
hearing in the Senate Judiciary Committee. The hearing made clear what you
and I both know: Kash Patel poses a real threat to justice and the rights
of Americans.
Patel’s nomination is so extreme and outrageous that many former
Republican law enforcement and national security officials oppose him
serving in the role.

Senator Chris Coons (D-Del.) asked if Patel would open an investigation
into someone who opposed the Trump agenda, just because Trump asked him
to. Patel evaded the question. The FBI must be above partisan politics and
Trump’s pursuits of vengeance.
Repeatedly, Senators tried to get Patel to acknowledge that President
Biden won the 2020 election. Patel, over and over again, dodged the
question. He was only willing to say that Biden was “certified” and served
as the President, not that he won. As one of Trump’s most loyal allies,
this comes as no surprise. We all know that President Biden won the
election, this is just Patel parroting Trump’s Big Lie.
Sen. Mazie Hirono drilled Patel on his promises to seek retribution
against his—and Trump’s—enemies. When she asked him about his vow to “come
after the people in the media...” you guessed it, Patel evaded the
question.
Sen. Amy Klobuchar pressed Patel on whether he intended to use his
position as FBI Director to “go after” members of the media, government
officials, both in the Biden administration and Trump’s own appointees
from his first term. Yet again, Patel dodged the questions.
It’s clear from these non-answers — anyone who opposes Trump and MAGA
Republicans will be fair game for Patel.

We must protect our democracy from Patel’s threats and pursuit of
retribution. We must demand a Director of the FBI who will uphold the law,
not fight for Trump.
As the Director of the FBI, Patel would have the power to cause serious
harm to those he or Trump deems enemies to their MAGA agenda. This could
include anyone who attempts to resist their extremist priorities.
Throughout his hearing yesterday, Patel demonstrated nothing but his blind
willingness to be Trump’s willing enforcer. Patel is wrong for this
position – and wrong for the American people. We must join together to
press the Senate to reject his nomination.
