A week for reflection

Good afternoon, I hope you have all had a good week.

This Monday marked the 80th Holocaust Memorial Day, a day where we remember all victims of genocide from around the world.

I was also pleased this week to see the Tobacco and Vapes bill pass out of committee, and progress to its next stage.
ANDREW IN THE COMMUNITY

🏫 Burnage Boys Academy

It was great to meet with pupils from Burnage Academy for Boys today, alongside staff and the BeeWell team, to discuss young people’s wellbeing and the impact of the #BeeWell ([link removed]) survey.
🏫 Progress Schools Gorton

This morning, I visited Progress Schools Gorton, based in the HideOut Youth Zone, to meet staff and learn more about their vital work supporting young people who struggle in mainstream education.

It was great to see the work the staff do, Progress Schools rents this space in this fantastic building and provides support for the young people who attend.

🍩 Willow Wood Guinness Book of World Records

At Willow Wood Hospice, Brett Casterton managed to clinch the world record for 'most doughnuts stacked in under a miniute' with 14! Stealing the title away from New York City for Tameside!

The doughnuts were made by Tameside College and all the proceeds went to Willow Wood Hospice

🌳 Willow Wood Hospice

It’s always a pleasure to visit Willow Wood Hospice and their utterly brilliant team of staff.

This time I met with their CEO Tracy Minshull, where we discussed end of life care and support, the governments funding for hospices, and the funding challenges faced by hospices.

🧹 Friends of the Tame Valley Cleanup

Staff from my office joined with UU River Rangers, Friends of the Tame Valley volunteers, Mersey Rivers Trust, Councillor Allison Gwynne and River Tame Anglers to clean up the pollution around Jet Amber Fields,

🚸 School Streets - Acacia Primary Academy

Fantastic to be invited to Acacia Primary Academy for the launch of their School Streets programme which aims to improve the health and safety around the school during peak hours.

Walking, cycling and taking public transport to school is cheaper and often more fun than taking the car, as well as being better for health and wellbeing.

🕊️ Holocaust Memorial Day

Monday marked the 80th Anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz, and marks the day where we remember all those lost to the facist Nazi regime

I signed the book of commemoration with the Holocaust Education Trust, as we get further from this date, and as this event fades out of living memory, we must work hard to ensure the past is never forgotten, and to stand against hate in all its forms.
🚭 Tobacco and Vapes Bill Passes Committee 🎉

I’m very happy to say that the Tobacco and Vapes Bill has now passed the Committee stage. After weeks of debating, hearing evidence, and scrutiny, the Bill is now ready to go to the Report stage where all MPs can speak on the Bill.

I'm incredibly proud of this Bill and all the brilliant scientists, academics, and parliamentarians that have brought it to fruition.
⚕️ Cardiology meeting in the Department of Health

This week I met with Stephen and Gill Ayling, Steven Cox (CEO of Cardiac Risk in the Young), and Professor Mary Sheppard (Cardiac Pathologist) in the Department of Health.

We discussed whether a case could be made for Cardiac Screening for all young people, and also to explore how we can make progress on this issue, including whether NICE guidance is being followed; whether ECGs should be used more; how we identify risk in people who are non-symptomatic; the use of genetics; and how we use the data we have to make a stronger case to the National Screening Committee.
🖼️ 555 Gang

It was lovely to get the 555 gang back together for the introduction of Lyn Brown to the House of Lords as Baroness of Silvertown in West Ham.

We were all elected to the House on the 5th of May, 2005, hence the 555!
The government announced its plans to introduce a deposit returns scheme in 2027, giving everyone a financial incentive to recycle and bringing us in-line with the EU and other nations around the world.
I voted to pass the water special measures bill, delivering tougher penalties for law breaking water bosses, limiting bonuses and introducing higher fines to protect our waterways.
An integrated, departmental style, budget was introduced to Manchester, giving the mayor better control over his budget. The money will be used to continue the transformation of the Bee Network, keep ticket prices down, and deliver adult skills and employment support across Greater Manchester.

We announced our new statutory levy to tackle gambling harms, generating over £100m a year to fund treatment, prevention and research.
