President's Message

In these confusing and often unsettling times, NASN's leadership wants to express our deepest gratitude and unwavering support to all dedicated school nurses. Your role as caregivers, advocates, and trusted figures in schools has never been more critical.

We recognize the immense challenges you face as you work to ensure the health and well-being of students, staff, and, by extension, their families. Whether addressing somatic symptoms of stress, navigating complex health concerns, or creating inclusive spaces where every child feels valued and safe, your work is the heartbeat of a healthy school environment.

We stand united in our mission to nurture health, foster safety, and build inclusive communities where every child can learn and thrive. As always, NASN will tirelessly advocate for students, families, and school nurses based on science and evidence-based practice. We are here to support you with resources, advocacy, and the collective strength of our members.

Continuing Nursing’s Commitment to School Health

School health has long been overlooked when funding scientific inquiry. The Journal of School Nursing (JOSN) article The National Institute of Nursing Research Prioritizes School Health discusses the extraordinary announcement this past October by the Director of the National Institute of Nursing Research (NINR), Shannon Zenk, PhD, RN, FAAN, that school health has been named one of the strategic imperatives for federal nursing research funding and what school nurses can do to leverage this opportunity.

Related Resources: Data is essential to advancing school nursing science. NASN's data Initiative, the National School Health Data Set: Every Student Counts!, provides school nurses with support and structure for collecting and using data.

NASN membership includes access to two highly regarded journal publications, JOSN and NASN School Nurse, providing members with critical information to stay informed, advance their practice, and advocate for the health and safety of students.

Health Care Transition Planning for Students With Lupus

Systemic lupus erythematosus is the most common form of lupus, affecting an estimated 200,000 individuals in the US, including children. Learning how pediatric-onset lupus impacts children and teens and acquiring current evidence-based information, tools/resources, and strategies is critical to supporting the confidence and competence of the school nurse in transition planning from pediatric to adult care for students with lupus. Incorporate healthcare transition planning for students with lupus into your school nursing practice with this free NCPD program!
