The first week of the Trump Administration has made chaos the new normal. We’ve been through this before, so we know the information blitz is part of their strategy to tire us out.

 

But Friend, we are in this fight with you. We will not stop our work until young people get the future they deserve.

 

Here’s what you need to know:

 

“Trump administration directs widespread pause of federal loans and grants” -The Hill

 

WHAT’S HAPPENING: On Monday, Donald Trump ordered federal funding be paused by 5:00 PM on Tuesday in an effort to deny us access to education, affordable housing, healthcare, and a low cost of living. As of Wednesday, this full-blown attack on the millions of Americans who rely on these programs was rescinded, but the impact was still felt by millions.

 

WHAT DOES THIS MEAN: Only by protecting access to affordable healthcare options can we advance economic justice. Donald Trump only cares about lining the pockets of his billionaire buddies, which is why he wasted no time in taking action to limit government spending. As only Congress can allocate spending, this illegal move by Trump makes it clear what his priorities should be.

“Office of Gun Violence Prevention website goes dark under Trump” -Mashable

 

WHAT’S HAPPENING: One day after Donald Trump took office, he closed the first-ever White House Office of Gun Violence Prevention opened under the Biden Administration, whose work caused historic lows in reported gun-related crimes.

 

WHAT DOES THIS MEAN: Common-sense gun safety laws are under attack. This was a blatant show of where Trump’s priorities lie: guns over lives.

 

WHAT CAN YOU DO: We deserve to live in a world where people are protected over guns, which is why we encourage you to reach out to your representatives in Congress and ask them to ban assault weapons NOW.

 

This past week marked 52 years since Roe v. Wade established the constitutionally protected right to choose – a right since overturned by the Supreme Court in 2022. The majority of Americans believe we need to protect abortion rights, which is why we are doing everything we can to protect abortion access.

This archaic ban comes at a sad time for abortion rights activists. Cecile Richards, the former head of Planned Parenthood and lifelong women’s rights activist passed away on Inauguration Day. We are grateful for the work of activists like her who paved the way to secure and protect our rights.
