JANUARY 2025
|
Dear Friend,
This month, Donald Trump was once again sworn in as the President of the United States. And he immediately began attacks on people and democratic institutions for the benefit of corporations.
In just his first week in office, his administration withdrew the U.S. from the World Health Organization, pulled out of the Paris Climate Agreement, shut down efforts to advance racial equity in the federal government, began immigration raids, and more.
If it feels overwhelming, know that it is supposed to. It's deliberate, and it's designed to exhaust you and make you stop paying attention. But in the face of the chaos, know that you can still make an impact. You can still raise your voice in the face of policies that hurt people and communities. You can still care for your neighbors in big and small ways. And together, we can still take on corporate power, and build a better world.
We know it's possible to continue waging and winning campaigns that challenge corporate power regardless of who the president is because we've done it for decades. Together, we have a track record of notching big victories for people over corporations no matter who’s in the White House -- including the last time Trump and his corporate shills were in power. Like when we stopped a water privatization thread in Pittsburgh, PA in early 2018, or successfully pushed Minnesota's Attorney General to launch a lawsuit against Exxon in 2020.
Here are just a few of the ways we've been continuing to make an impact this month:

Launching the new People Over Profit Corps
|
We believe in a world where everyone, regardless of what they look like or the money in their pockets, has access to clean air, clean water, and the ability to thrive. We know you believe in that, too. The dangerous, polluting corporations and the billionaires behind them that propelled Trump’s return to power want us to believe that that world is impossible. But the Corporate Accountability community has a track record of notching big victories no matter who’s in the White House -- including the last time Trump was in power. So we’re launching the People Over Profit Corps, or POP Corps: a community of people challenging the corporate takeover with fierce, urgent action and joy.

Powering the movement to challenge the new era of corporate power under Trump
|
Trump has signaled that he intends to wage full-fledged attacks on people and democracy for the benefit of corporations. But we won't let his disastrous agenda go unchecked. Sp to meet this difficult moment, we're launching the Freedom From Corruption Campaign, and we need 50 new donors to step up by February 28 so that we have the resources needed to take on Trump and his corporate allies. And when you donate to this campaign before the deadline, a generous member has agreed to match your gift with an additional $150! Donate now and help us reach our goal before February 28!

Announcing our new Executive Director
|
Earlier this month, we announced Corporate Accountability’s new incoming executive director: Ari Belathar. Ari (they/them) brings abundant campaign experience, leadership skills, and a strong vision. They will step into this role in February and will support Corporate Accountability in deepening our impact -- especially as we continue to put our power and resources behind Global South campaigning. Ari also brings the drive, and skills to win corporate campaigns with first-hand experience of the destructive and abusive power of corporations -- and how resistance and organizing can successfully create change. Shining a spotlight on the movement for a global treaty holding transnational corporations accountable
|
Transnational corporations are too often able to escape responsibility for harmful products, policies, and practices because they operate across borders. As a result, people whose rights are violated by transnational corporations find it difficult, if not impossible, to obtain justice. But right now, we have a historic opportunity to protect human rights globally. Pushed by a global movement, governments are in early negotiations to develop a United Nations treaty that has the potential to be a powerful, lifesaving tool for justice. In partnership with allies from all corners of the world, we are organizing to ensure this treaty becomes the long-searched path to justice effectively protecting human rights from corporate abuse and holding transnational corporations accountable. Watch this short video we put together featuring the voices of people who are powering the movement behind this push to end corporate impunity on a global scale

Coming together to read towards corporate accountability
|
Reading Towards Corporate Accountability (RTCA) just wrapped up its first season, where we collectively explored The Hundred Years’ War on Palestine from start to finish. It was an incredible space for deep conversation, learning, and even some collective action! As we look ahead to the next iteration, we want to hear from you -- what would you like to see in the program moving forward? Click the link to take our survey and share your thoughts!

Corporate Accountability stops transnational corporations from devastating democracy, trampling human rights, and destroying our planet. We are building a world rooted in justice where corporations answer to people, not the other way around -- a world where every person has access to clean water, healthy food, a safe place to live, and the opportunity to reach their full human potential.
