Sign our petition to demand Shapiro fully fund community violence intervention programs.
Fellow Advocate,
This week, the White House released a series of confusing memos that threaten grant funding to states and organizations providing critical support to citizens. This directive includes freezing funding for the critical community violence intervention (CVI) programs that have led to a 42% drop in victims of gun homicides in Pennsylvania over 2 years,1 as well as for crucial suicide prevention initiatives. While their actions are puzzling, their goal is clear: to sow chaos and disrupt the lives of the most vulnerable among us.
We cannot stand for this. Gov. Shapiro is facing a deadline of Tuesday to release his proposed 2025-2026 budget, and we must lean on him to stand up for community violence intervention and suicide prevention programs, and be a firewall against the draconian policies of the new administration.
Although the outcomes of the President’s actions are still murky, the lesson here should be crystal clear. We need our state leaders to protect critical life-saving programs in the face of disastrously uncertain federal funding.
