Dear neighbor,
I pride myself on attending to the real issues of my neighbors in House District 89. Each year, the General Assembly meets to work on issues that impact people from all over Indiana. This legislative session, I am focused on making life easier for working Hoosiers. Instead of fighting culture wars or trying to get juicy soundbites, I have the needs of the hard-working people in our community at the core of everything I do. Please see below for a full list and summary of my bills.
HB 1278 [ [link removed] ] Restrictions on train length
This bill is designed to increase the safety of our railroads and decrease traffic. If passed into law, this bill would require that all trains on main and branch lines be shorter than 8,500 feet. This will ensure that a train operator doesn’t get overwhelmed trying to control a train that is too long, while also limiting the amount of time that trains will block our roads at railroad crossings.
HB 1279 [ [link removed] ] Sexual predator employment
Because of my background in law enforcement, I am always focused on keeping our community safe. This bill would prohibit sex offenders from working in jobs where they supervise or touch children. Making sure our kids are safe from people that might harm them in any way will always be a priority for me.
HB 1280 [ [link removed] ] Taxation of military income
This bill would exempt some members of our uniformed services from paying state income taxes. Our men and women in uniform work every day to keep us safe. Hoosiers that have volunteered to serve our country should be able to keep more of their hard-earned dollars. This bill would also help military retention and recruitment rates in the state.
HB 1281 [ [link removed] ] Criminal penalties
In 2020, Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department Officer Breann Leath was killed in the line of duty at the young age of 24 while responding to a domestic disturbance. Over the summer, the man who unfairly cut her life short received a sentence of time served for reckless homicide. This bill seeks to increase the penalty for reckless homicide to give judges far more discretion to take specific scenarios into account.
HB 1516 [ [link removed] ] Ban on vapor product sales to persons under 21
Despite the falling rate of Hoosiers that smoke cigarettes, tobacco companies are still finding ways to profit at the expense of the health of young people in our state. House Bill 1516 would prohibit the sale of vape products to anyone under the age of 21. This would include nicotine-free vapor products that can get young people hooked on vapor products. Classifying "vapor products" as separate from tobacco products will close any loopholes in state regulations.
HB 1517 [ [link removed] ] State holidays
House Bill 1517 would establish "American Professional Football Day" as a state holiday. We are known as the state of basketball, but Hoosiers also love their football. There is nothing better than watching the Super Bowl with friends and family, but there's also nothing worse than having to wake up early for work on Monday. In fact, the day after the Super Bowl is the most called-off day in America. House Bill 1517 would allow Hoosiers to fully celebrate this iconic American tradition by making the day after the big game a state holiday.
HB 1518 [ [link removed] ] Purchase of vehicles by state entities
House Bill 1518 would require the state to only purchase non-luxury vehicles. This ensures that our state agencies and departments use common sense when it comes to the purchase of vehicles. The state should not be using taxpayer dollars to lease or purchase luxury vehicles for official business. As your state representative, I will always work to make sure that our state government uses your hard-earned money responsibly.
HB 1676 [ [link removed] ] Firearm storage
Every year, I introduce this legislation to protect Hoosier children from unintentional child shootings and promote responsible gun ownership. If passed, House Bill 1676 would incentivize responsible gun ownership by charging anyone that does not properly secure a firearm that is later used in an accidental shooting with a felony. I firmly believe in the second amendment and right to keep and bear arms, but we must ensure that deadly weapons stay out of the hands of children. Every year, far too many children in Indiana tragically die as a result of accidental shootings. My hope is that this legislation will take steps to making that reality a thing of the past.
HB 1677 [ [link removed] ] Waste disposal
No one likes a litterbug. I introduced House Bill 1677 with the intent of keeping our community and state clean. Indianapolis had an average of 338 illegal dumping reports per month in 2023. This is totally unacceptable. If this bill were passed into law, anyone dumping large amounts of trash would commit a misdemeanor offense. Keeping our community clean, our environment free from pollution and Hoosiers healthy will always be a priority for me.
