** Majority of young people back proposed smoke-free generation law, study finds

A study by the University of Nottingham has found strong support among young people for the government’s proposed smoke-free generation policy. The research, which involved 36 participants aged 12 to 21, showed that most viewed the policy as a positive step toward preventing tobacco addiction and improving public health. While a small minority raised concerns about personal choice, the majority called for strict and well-funded enforcement, tobacco licensing and penalties for retailers who sell tobacco to underage buyers.

Hazel Cheeseman, Chief Executive of Action on Smoking and Health (ASH), stressed that the policy is not about limiting freedoms but about safeguarding young people from lifelong addiction and severe health consequences. She urged MPs to recognise that younger generations see the legislation as a protective measure rather than a restriction, giving them the chance to grow up free from the harms of smoking.
