Neighbors,

I’m sending another newsletter one day after the previous one to fix a mistake and to comment on some of the craziness coming from the Trump administration.

On Monday, the Federal Office of Management and Budget sent a vaguely worded two-page memo [ [link removed] ] to all federal agencies directing them to “temporarily pause all activities related to obligation or disbursement of all Federal financial assistance" that could conflict with our current President’s agenda. Thankfully last night, a Judge temporarily blocked this funding freeze. It certainly seems to me to be unconstitutional to ignore laws passed by Congress.

I share the anxiety and fear many of you have expressed about what the next four years may bring and how they will impact our community. If you see or feel impacts, feel free to reach out to my office. It will be important for all of us to stay in communication with each other. 

I am committed to using every lever of power we have at the state level to protect people, the rule of law, our state progress, and our representative democracy. This actually reinforces why I am taking the legislative action of staying away from the state capitol until we can negotiate a power-sharing agreement predicated on insisting House Republicans respect election results and not overturn an election (Shakopee - Rep Tabke).

As part of the Transportation committee, I went on a tour of a training facility for Millwrights (heavy machinery) and Pile Drivers (deep foundation specialists), who are both part of the Carpenters Union. Check out the picture below - what do you think the circled boxes are?

They're sand boxes! Yes - they’re filled with sand (which doesn't compress) as part of the temporary support structure when constructing a bridge. When the permanent bridge is up, Pile Drivers take sledgehammers to the boxes. Then the sand pours out, boxes collapse, and they can then easily remove the temp structure. Pretty cool!

The Transportation Committee visited with Metro Transit and Metropolitan Council for a tour of their bus garage. It was great to see their pilot EV bus charging infrastructure, and hear about their plans to significantly expand it over the next couple of years. Did you know that the transit system here is the 15th largest in the U.S.?
