Britain Leading Again

This new year brings us new challenges, John.

The new Trump Administration is a threat to peace and prosperity in the UK,
across Europe, and around the world. It’s never been more important for us to
stand up for our liberal values, and hold the powerful, including tech
billionaires likeElon Musk
<[link removed]>
, to account.

In his New Year’s speech, Ed Davey set out why we must rebuild our
relationship with Europe to strengthen our position in the face of these
challenges. This would involve agreeing a new Customs Union with the EU to
Trump-proof the economy.

A new Customs Union would help renew the ties of trust and friendship with the
EU, and remove damaging trade barriers and expensive red tape.

The Liberal Democrats are leading the way again with ambitious plans to grow
our economy and restore Britain’s positive role on the world stage.

Israel-Gaza ceasefire

The Israel-Gaza ceasefire is finally a moment of hope after many months of
devastating conflict.

Now we must ensure this is not just a temporary truce, but a lasting peace,
with the remaining hostages returning home, the humanitarian crisis in Gaza
coming to an end, and the first steps taken towards a two-state solution.

The failure to deliver new hospitals

The Guardian has reported that at least half of the new hospitals promised by
Boris Johnson will now be delayed further, in a betrayal of communities across
the country.

After broken promises by the Conservatives, Labour are now kicking the plans
into the long grass.

We’re calling for the Health Secretary to publish a full impact assessment of
the delays, because patients have a right to know how at risk they are, and how
many more delays they will have to suffer as a result of the government’s
decision.

At Prime Minister's Questions today, Ed Davey, Clive Jones, and Ian Roome
highlighted the impact these delays are having, and asked whether the Prime
Minister would meet constituents affected, to see if the projects can be
brought forward:

The Government’s Commission into adult social care is too slow

We welcome the Government’s announcement of an independent commission into
adult social care, as well as cross-party talks on reform. But with the review
set to take at least three years, we’re worried the Government is simply
kicking the can down the road.

We’re urging the review to be completed within a year at the most, so we can
finally deliver the care needed for the elderly and disabled, and to relieve
the pressure on the NHS.

Ed Davey recently challenged the Government on this at Prime Minister’s
Questions:

27 January marked Holocaust Memorial Day, a moment to remember those murdered
during the Holocaust. This year’s commemoration was particularly important as
it marked the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau.

Writing in the Jewish Chronicle, Ed Davey explained why we must never forget
the appalling atrocities, so we can ensure it never happens again.

80 years on, we must continue to stand firm against hatred and discrimination
wherever we find it.

Updates on our MPs’ Private Members' Bills

At the start of this Parliament, four of our MPs were successfully selected in
a ballot to put forward Private Members’ Bills. While any MP can put forward
these bills, as ballot bills are prioritised, they have the best chance of
being debated and progressing.

Here’s a quick update on these four Bills, which have all now had their
Second Reading in the House of Commons:

Ahead of a debate on Roz Savage’s Climate and Nature Bill
<[link removed]>, last Friday, Roz secured a number of
commitments from the Government, including talks with ministers, coordination
on climate and nature policies, annual government statements on progress, and a
government-led debate in the future.

number of lottery tickets charities can sell, so they can generate more income
for important causes.

crack-down on the appalling trade of smuggling pets, garnering support from the
government.
