Dear Neighbor,

On Friday, January 24, the Minnesota Supreme Court ruled that Republicans’ attempted power grab in the Minnesota House violated the state Constitution. The Court’s ruling invalidates every action Republicans took since the first day of session on January 14.

Republicans tried to seize power that the voters did not give them. The voters delivered a Minnesota House of Representatives where neither party has a majority. The only way the Minnesota House will function is if we work together.

Republicans must respect the results of the election in Shakopee where voters elected DFLer Brad Tabke to represent them. Instead, Republicans are refusing to seat him [ [link removed] ], which would disenfranchise 22,000 voters. House DFLers will not allow Republicans to overturn an election simply because they can. Never before has a legislator been kicked out when they have done nothing wrong, and to do so would subvert the free and fair elections Minnesotans expect. Rep. Tabke won on election night, won in a recount, and won in court.

Democrats are asking Republicans for something very simple: to honor the will of the voters in Shakopee and statewide. We continue to offer a reasonable path forward [ [link removed] ] where Republicans would have control of the House when they have a temporary one-seat advantage, including the speakership and control of committees, with a co-governing agreement beginning when the House returns to a tie following a special election in District 40B. This is similar to a proposal the Senate GOP agreed to with the Senate DFL prior to the start of session.

Minnesota voters sent a clear message on Election Night – they expect us to govern together. Now that it is clear Republicans must work with Democrats for the House to operate, I’m hopeful we can reach an agreement soon.
