The Tuskegee Airmen are American heroes and patriots. They broke down barriers for generations of African Americans in the military and bravely defended our freedoms against the Nazis during World War II.

Yet over the weekend, on orders from Donald Trump, the U.S. Air Force confirmed that it removed certain references to the Tuskegee Airmen from the curriculum for new recruits — before backtracking earlier this week.

This is an outrageous betrayal of our values as Americans.

I’m relieved that the Tuskegee Airmen’s heroism will stay in the teaching curriculum, where it belongs. But let’s be clear, it should have never been removed in the first place.

Americans should see Trump’s attacks on “DEI” for what they really are—a blatant attempt to whitewash our history and roll back our progress.

The Tuskegee Airmen are a vital part of our history as Alabamians and as Americans. I will never let their legacy be erased.
