Email from Los Angeles Police Protective League Daily News & Updates Law Enforcement News Paramedics treat LAPD officer after motorcycle collision on 105 Freeway Los Angeles County paramedics treated a motorcycle officer following a collision on the 105 Freeway Friday night. The collision happened on the eastbound 105 Freeway between Atlantic Boulevard and Garfield Avenue in Lynwood. The Los Angeles Police Department said the officer was assigned to the Central Traffic Division. The department said the officer was breathing while receiving treatment. Paramedics took the officer to the hospital in an unknown condition. The Central Traffic Division's watch commander said this was not a hit-and-run collision. CBS 2 A slimmed-down LAPD seems here to stay. What happens to crime with fewer cops? When Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass gave pay raises to the city’s rank-and-file police officers last year, she sold it as a sensible investment toward regrowing the LAPD to the 9,500-member force it was before her election in 2022. In the months since, Bass and leaders in the Los Angeles Police Department have continued to project optimism about reaching that goal. Behind the scenes, though, officials are starting to confront the reality that the LAPD buildup won’t happen anytime soon — while acknowledging that the country’s third-largest police department may even continue to shrink. New projections included in the department’s fiscal year 2026 budget proposal show that between recruiting shortfalls and attrition, leaders expect to lose more than 150 cops, leaving a force of about 8,620 by June 30, 2026. That would mark the lowest deployment in roughly 30 years, records show. During public appearances, Bass, LAPD Chief Jim McDonnell and other top leaders are still making the case that the department needs to grow, arguing more manpower is required to maintain public safety. The Palisades fire recently showed the department can be stretched thin during a major disaster. Meanwhile, the upcoming World Cup and Olympic Games loom as massive security challenges. Los Angeles Times Trial begins for woman charged with husband's stabbing murder at Woodland Hills home A prosecutor told jurors Friday that a woman who had been carrying on an affair behind her husband's back was the "mastermind" behind his stabbing death and was the only one who knew the narrow time frame that the prominent hairdresser would be alone at the couple's Woodland Hills home. Monica Sementilli, now 53, is charged with murder and conspiracy in connection with the killing of her 49-year-old husband, Fabio Sementilli, in his back yard on Jan. 23, 2017, shortly before the couple was set to celebrate their 20th wedding anniversary. Co-defendant Robert Louis Baker -- who was described by Deputy District Attorney Beth Silverman as a registered sex offender who was Sementilli's "lover" -- pleaded no contest in July 2023 to first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit murder. Baker, now 62, also admitted the special circumstance allegations of murder for financial gain and murder while lying in wait. He was immediately sentenced to life without parole, and Sementilli could face the same sentence if she is convicted of the same counts and allegations. ABC 7 2 drivers flee the scene after hitting, killing woman in North Hollywood A woman died on Friday night after she was struck by two drivers who fled the scene, according to authorities. The Los Angeles Police Department said a hit-and-run crash was reported at about 9:35 p.m. Friday in the area of Victory Boulevard and Troost Avenue in North Hollywood. A woman was crossing the street when the driver of an unknown sedan hit her while traveling westbound on Victory. That initial collision sent the woman to her hands and knees in the middle of the roadway. While in that position, a second driver, whose vehicle was described by police as a blue/gray Toyota 4RUNNER, hit her. The woman, 26, was pronounced dead at the scene. Her identity has not yet been revealed publicly, pending notification of next of kin. Both drivers that hit the woman fled the scene. She was shot when a bullet came through a neighboring business, which WTAE and WEWS reported was a dentist office, and she died after being taken to a separate hospital. The Bradenton Herald Public Safety News LA County issues ocean water quality advisory The County of Los Angeles Public Health has issued a statement to say that there's an ocean water quality rain advisory for all L.A. beaches, in effect until 8 a.m. Thursday. "Due to current rainfall, the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health advises beach users to avoid all water contact, especially near discharging storm drains, creeks, and rivers due to potentially higher bacteria levels in these areas,'' the report states. "This includes any runoff that may flow onto or pond on the beach sand. Ocean and bay recreational waters, especially near discharging storm drains, creeks and rivers can be contaminated with bacteria, chemicals, debris, trash, and other public health hazards from city streets and mountain areas after a rain fall. Individuals who enter the water in these areas could become ill. Rain advisories remain in effect for 72 hours after the rainfall ends." This advisory may be extended depending on further rainfall. NBC 4 Risk rises for mudslides around L.A. County fire zones; prepare for worst-case scenario, officials warn With more rain on the way, officials warned Sunday of an increasing risk of mudslides in Los Angeles County’s burn areas, with a 10% to 20% chance of significant flash flooding and debris flows capable of damaging roads and homes in and around areas devastated by wildfires. “This is the worst-case scenario to prepare for,” said Kristan Lund, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Oxnard. “We do have increasing concern for the burn scars,” Lund said. The charred footprint of the Eaton fire, which blackened more than 14,000 acres, is the most worrisome. “These flash floods and these debris flows could happen in and near or below these burn scars.” A flood watch took effect at 10 a.m. Sunday and was set to continue through 4 p.m. Monday for the burned areas of the Eaton fire in the Altadena and Pasadena areas; the Palisades and Franklin fires in the Pacific Palisades and Malibu areas; the Hughes fire around Lake Castaic; and the Bridge fire in the San Gabriel Mountains west and southwest of Wrightwood.
