*Burn Area Residents Urged to *

*Prepare for Potential Mud and Debris Flows*

*LOS ANGELES (January 25, 2025) – *With a forecast of up to 2.5 inches of rain for local foothills and mountains and a 15-25% chance of thunderstorms, Los Angeles County Public Works advises residents of recent burn areas to take extra precaution and prepare in advance of the incoming storm.

Small, isolated mud and debris flows are possible in burn areas with less than two years of recovery. Streets may be flooded or blocked by debris, and some high-risk properties in recent burn areas may be advised to evacuate. LA County Public Works is collaborating across the region with multiple agencies to protect the public, property, and the environment from potential mud and debris flows.

Residents of the Eaton, Palisades, Hurst, Kenneth, Sunset, Lidia, Bridge, and Franklin burn areas can prepare themselves, their families, and properties with the following tips:


* Visit *READY.LACounty.gov [ [link removed] ] *for valuable storm tips and resources, like free sandbag distribution locations and the Homeowners Guide for Flood, Debris and Erosion Control. [ [link removed] ]
* Stay tuned to local weather reports and alerts from the National Weather Service [ [link removed] ], and follow the instructions of law enforcement if told to evacuate.
* Develop an emergency plan. 
* Know your property’s risk factors. Clear drainage paths. Use sandbags to direct runoff and protect structures.
* Keep trash cans and vehicles off the street to allow stormwater to travel freely. 
* Burn area residents should remain indoors during the storm, if possible, and avoid contact with polluted stormwater runoff.
