350 Chicago World Environment Day Fundraiser

Friday, June 5th is World Environment Day! To commemorate the day, 350 Chicago has organized a peer-to-peer fundraiser through Give Lively. The fundraiser will begin on the morning of Friday, June 5th and will continue for one week.

So, what is peer-to-peer fundraising? The Give Lively platform leverages social media to raise money by asking your friends and followers to donate. Watch our Facebook, Twitter and Instagram pages for more information and updates. We will also send an email to our followers to provide more details about participating.

While we know money is tight due to the pandemic and resulting economic troubles, we're hoping to gather small-dollar donations that will help us keep up momentum with our environmental advocacy work.

So, let’s all pitch in and try to raise money from our friends and neighbors on social media. Every dollar raised matters and we hope you will join us.

Elections matter: Climate deregulation continues as Democrats ramp up climate efforts

In an important shift, Biden now says that as President he would ban the Keystone Pipeline. Meanwhile, Trump is using the COVID crisis as a tool to push further deregulation, reverse an Obama-era EPA ruling that opens a pristine Alaskan brown bear habitat to risky open pit mining, and reappoint an acting director of the BLM who has gutted the agency and pushes land management plans that favor energy companies.

The momentum continues in the drive to make climate issues a key part of the Democratic campaign in 2020. The members of the joint Biden-Sanders climate task force have been named, with AOC and John Kerry serving as co-chairs. Other members include Varshini Prakash, co-founder of the youth-led Sunrise Movement, and former EPA administrator and current NRDC CEO Gina McCarthy. Two other groups have formed to support the Democratic efforts. Climate Power 2020 is a joint project of the Sierra Club, the Center for American Progress (CAP), and the League of Conservation Voters (LCV), and the Evergreen Action group is led by former staffers from the Jay Inslee campaign.

Finally, although many of the more left-leaning activists have skeptical views of how far Biden is willing to go, all but one of the 171 organizers for the Earth Day Live demonstration have said that they intend to vote for Biden.

Activism and Divestment News

A new climate initiative, Arm in Arm, was recently launched by members of the US Climate Action Network (USCAN). Using “disruptive humanitarianism,” Arm in Arm aims to combat climate change through a four-phase process of nonviolent direct action. And yes, there is a fledgling Chicago hub - see the Find a Hub page for more information or to get involved.

On the divestment front, climate activists and employees are urging tech giants to stop providing AI and cloud services to fossil fuel companies. After a new Greenpeace report shed light on contracts between Google, Microsoft, and Amazon and oil companies, Google announced that it would no longer build AI or algorithms to assist in fossil fuel extraction. Microsoft and Amazon have not directly addressed the Greenpeace report.

Last week, the University of California announced its total divestment from fossil fuels. More than 50 universities have made divestment commitments over the past 10 years; so far, UC is the largest university in the United States to have divested fully.
