Dear John,

This January 15th would have been Martin Luther King Jr’s 96th birthday. Over the course of his brief life Dr King built a movement and inspired people across the world with his courage, commitment, and unmatched ability to give voice to the concerns of the Civil Rights Movement.

Today is an opportunity to reflect on what that work has given our nation, and how we might continue, in some small way, to follow the example set by the heroes of the movement. As Dr King said, “Change does not roll in on the wheels of inevitability, but comes through continuous struggle. And so we must straighten our backs and work for our freedom.”

John, at a time when elected leaders at the state and federal levels have expressed open hostility and disdain for the values that Dr King and the Civil Rights Movement espoused, it can be easy to feel discouraged. However, we hope that you will stand alongside us in committing to “straightening our backs and working for freedom” in every way we can.

Juntos/Together,
