# [#]My dad was a Lutheran minister in Detroit who worked with Martin Luther King Sr. after his son was killed and pushed to desegregate housing in the 1960s. He set an example to always do what is right, even when it’s not easy.

I am still driven by these values today , which is why I feel so strongly that we must focus on dismantling systemic discrimination and addressing racial disparities at the ballot box, in our justice systems, and in healthcare and housing.

We have to stand up to the extremists who have weaponized hate, racism, and bigotry within our political system so that we can make progress on long-overdue reforms.

The coinciding of MLK Day with Inauguration Day underscores the importance of this mission.

Rest assured that under the new presidential administration and Congressional majorities, I will work across the aisle to find solutions that improve the lives of our communities – but I won’t bow to extremists or back down from our fundamental values.

Today, as we celebrate the life and legacy of Dr. King and reflect upon his teachings, I recommit myself to the fight for equity, justice, and peace. I encourage you to do the same, and I invite your response if you would like to share how you plan to honor Dr. King.
