People For the American Way.

Friend,

When House Republicans are sworn in for the incoming 119th Congress, they plan to move quickly to pass legislation that will make it harder for Americans to register to vote in federal elections. The SAVE Act would require proof of citizenship whenever people register to vote—even if voters are just updating their registration because of a move or a name change. And since a traditional driver’s license won’t count as adequate proof, millions of people risk losing their legal right to cast a ballot.

Add your name to the petition urging the House of Representatives to reject the SAVE Act now! >>

Trump and MAGA Republicans have spent years repeating the lie that noncitizens are voting in droves. Noncitizen voting fraud is nearly nonexistent and the “solutions” to this false problem proposed by the SAVE Act will end up preventing many eligible voters from registering and casting their ballots.

The SAVE Act would require proof of citizenship to register to vote or even to simply update an existing registration. But the forms of identification used by the vast majority of Americans don’t actually provide citizenship information. For many, proving citizenship could suddenly become an impossibly high hurdle.

This bill would also effectively put to an end voter registration through the mail or online. That’s because under the SAVE Act election officials would have to review voters’ documentation in person. This creates an especially heavy burden for working people, rural residents and people with disabilities. In fact, this bill does nothing but create unnecessary obstacles that would only discourage people from registering and participating in our elections.

Sign on and tell the House of Representatives to reject this attack on the right to vote! >>

Congress should not be in the business of suppressing votes. Thank you for your advocacy on this issue.
