Dear friend of IDP,
As we step into 2025, we know that this year will bring extraordinary challenges. The Trump administration has made its intentions clear: to escalate the cruelty of mass detention and deportation and to deepen the criminalization of immigrants and people of color. Their goal is not just to punish but to normalize this treatment, manufacturing consent for inhumane policies by spreading fear and dehumanizing narratives.
At the Immigrant Defense Project, we refuse to let this go unchallenged. Because of supporters like you, we’ve built a robust, multi-pronged strategy to fight back and protect immigrant communities. This year, we’re doubling down on what we do best:
* Providing life-changing legal support to immigrants and their attorneys through our free hotline and technical assistance services. We’ll continue empowering immigrants to make informed decisions, navigate complex legal challenges, and stay connected with their families.
* Equipping communities with actionable knowledge through updated Know Your Rights materials and trainings that prepare organizers, leaders, and advocates to resist ICE’s tactics.
* Defending and expanding protective policies by working with grassroots coalitions, public defenders, and immigrant justice advocates to dismantle the ties between local agencies and ICE.
* Challenging harmful narratives that justify cruelty by monitoring and countering criminalizing language in political discourse and news coverage.
* Fighting for systemic change in the courts, narrowing the reach of harsh immigration laws, and securing precedent-setting legal victories that protect immigrant rights.
This year, we’re also proud to spearhead two new initiatives to build even stronger defenses for immigrant communities:
* A statewide collaborative effort to foster high-level coordination among immigrant justice organizations, unions, legal advocates, and faith-based groups. Together, we’ll share information, defensive strategies, and solidarity in the face of escalating attacks.
* Building on our history as a trusted source of information about ICE raids, we’re creating a decentralized system for legal and community-based organizations to work together to gather and verify raids reports from across New York State. This information will support advocacy, litigation, and public awareness, ensuring the truth about the harms of mass deportation reaches as many people as possible.
All of this work depends on you. We know that 2025 will demand more of us than ever before. We are thankful for your commitment to immigrant rights. Together, we can resist cruelty, protect immigrant families, and build a more just and humane future.
With gratitude and solidarity,
Marie Mark, Executive Director
