Team –
Bad news from New Hampshire: Republican Governor Chris Sununu has vetoed a bipartisan bill that would have guaranteed fair legislative districts after the next census.
After flipping the New Hampshire state legislature blue last year, state Democrats worked across the aisle to pass bipartisan legislation guaranteeing that future district lines would be drawn by an independent commission – preventing the right-wing gerrymandering that has plagued so many states and rigged legislatures for the GOP.
But now that Republican Chris Sununu has blocked fair maps, anything could happen.
Ensuring Democratic control in states like New Hampshire has never been this important – because the legislators elected this year and next will be the ones determining who draws legislative districts for years to come.
Please – can you chip in a $10 donation to elect state Democrats who will fight for fair districts all over the country?
New Hampshire is far from the only state where Republicans have benefitted from gerrymandered districts.
In Wisconsin, Democrats earned over 50% of the state Assembly vote – but hold just 36% of seats. Democratic congressional candidates in Texas earned 47% of votes for congressional candidates across the state, but due to gerrymandering, just over a third of congressional districts went blue.
And in Virginia – where legislative elections will be held in a matter of weeks – gerrymandering is the reason why the state legislature didn't turn blue in 2017.
We have to fight for fair districts in every corner of the country – our democracy depends on it. Chip in right now and join the effort >>
