Gun laws save lives. Does your state care enough to act?

John—

Today we released our Annual Gun Law Scorecard in the wake of yet another mass shooting, this time at Abundant Life Christian School in Wisconsin, leaving families in despair and a community in turmoil going into the holiday season.

These tragedies can and will keep happening until we take serious action to reform gun policy nationwide. Every year, our attorneys grade and rank all 50 states on their gun laws, identifying where progress has been made and comparing that to state gun death rates. And every year we come to the same conclusion: Fewer people die from gun violence in states that care enough to pass gun safety laws.

Check out the 2024 Gun Law Scorecard to see how your state ranks.

Maine was the most improved state this year, raising its grade from a D- to a C+ when state legislators responded to the mass shooting in Lewiston last year by passing waiting periods and expanding background checks. At the opposite end of the spectrum, South Carolina was this year’s biggest drop, thanks to its enactment of a dangerous permitless carry law.

Gun violence is preventable, and ignoring it is a policy choice—an unpopular one, since the public overwhelmingly supports gun safety laws. The more lawmakers start listening to their constituents instead of the gun lobby, the safer we’ll all be.

Gratefully,
Lindsay
