Friend --

After speaking to millions of working people at their front doors this year, one thing is certain - families are feeling the burden of rising costs, uncertainty around health care and a system that isn't prioritizing our needs.

We heard from people like Noreen in Philadelphia, who told us "this week I had to choose between getting all my groceries and affording my medications."

But we know that there are resources out there to help us plan our finances, get the care we need and get ready for the challenges we may face in the new year.

That’s why Working America will be sharing with you in the next few weeks some tools and guides for preparing for the new year. Today, we’re focusing on an easy first step – building a family budget.

According to a recent survey from the National Foundation for Credit Counseling, almost one-third of us are “just getting by” financially, and more than 60 percent of us are worried that “government instability” will hurt our pocketbooks sometime in the next year. But only about 40 percent of Americans track their spending and keep a household budget.

Creating a household budget can help you take control of what is in your power to change.

Our end-of-year guide includes help like:

  • Online tools for tracking your spending and making a monthly budget

  • Tips on what to do when you can’t cover your bills this month.

  • Guides on how to make big purchases or plan for the future.

And because we all know the best advice comes from people in our own community, we’re also asking older folks to share with us their best financial advice. What lessons did you wish you'd gotten about money when you were younger? Later on, we’ll share with all of you some of the best ones.

We’ll also be sharing other guides on finance, home safety, and more in the weeks ahead. And you can always find all of our guides to navigating the economy at www.workingamerica.org/gethelp

In Solidarity,
