Working Families Party

John,

The last race for Congress was just called in California — and the result may end up having a huge impact on the national political landscape.

After all the ballot counting finished this week, Democrat Adam Gray ended up successfully ousting the incumbent Republican in California’s 13th Congressional District by less than 200 votes.

With every Congressional seat across the country now called, it’s official: Republicans will enter the new Congress with the narrowest House majority of any party since at least the 1930s — a 220-215 vote margin that will be even slimmer at the start of 2025 due to three vacancies.

Effectively, starting in January, Republicans will need to rely on every last vote in their fractious caucus in order to advance their agenda in the House.

None of us have a crystal ball. But throw in absences, special elections, the chaos of the new administration, and other unpredictable events, and there’s every chance that we could end up with some major opportunities over the next year or two to block the Republican agenda and win back governing power for working people in the House.

We need to be prepared for whatever this new Congress might throw at us starting in just a few weeks. Can you make a contribution to help us hold vulnerable Republicans accountable, block the Trump Project 2025 agenda, and build on our battleground success to retake Congress in 2026?

The race in CA-13 was one of many battleground districts which came down to the wire this year. And our work made a huge collective difference in narrowing the Republican majority from coast to coast.

In 2023, we helped launch two coalition efforts: Battleground New York and Battleground California, that raised millions to target and flip competitive House districts, bringing together base-building organizations to lay the groundwork to identify and target flippable districts. Through Battleground’s canvassing, phonebanking, digital advertising, mail, and other voter outreach, our hard work paid off.

In total, we helped flip six House seats in battleground districts in 2024 in California and New York — wins that helped erode the Republican majority into the smallest in living memory.

And over the last few weeks since Election Day, Battleground CA member organizations cured more than 300 ballots in CA-13, helping make sure every last ballot was counted in the final race to be called.

Republicans and Trump may be dead set on passing their Project 2025 agenda through the House — but we are dead set on doing everything we can to thwart them at every turn, and preparing now to upend their slim majority in 2026.

Our work in battleground districts this year is proof of what’s possible when we invest early with a plan and build the infrastructure we need for electoral success. And we intend to keep building on that success in the years to come. That work starts now.

Will you contribute today to help us hold Republicans accountable, block Project 2025, and start now to prepare to retake Congress in 2026?

In solidarity,

Team WFP
