"One of the most important things [in dealing with the pandemic] is acknowledging
how much stress has been put on families," said Children's Law Center Policy Director
Sharra E. Greer.
Sharra spoke on WAMU's The Kojo Nnamdi Show yesterday [[link removed]],
emphasizing the need to prevent children from entering foster care -- especially
when stress on DC's families is at an all-time high.
Job loss. Food insecurity. Tight spaces. Uncertainty. Grief.
These are just a few of the pressures that can compound and increase the likelihood
of abuse and neglect. It is why Children's Law Center is constantly advocating for
the financial relief and mental health supports overwhelmed families need right
now.
"We really need to be doing all we can to support families," said Sharra.
We are connecting families with mental health services and advocating the District
to support behavioral health providers. We are staying in close contact with children
in foster care via Facetime, video chat and phone and making sure they can continue
virtual meetings with their birth parents and siblings. And we are partnering with
local agencies and government leaders to develop solutions that best serve DC's
children [[link removed]]
- in and out of foster care.
No matter what tomorrow brings, we will continue to do everything we can to minimize
the long-term impacts of this crisis on DC's children and families.

P.S. May is Foster Care Month. It is a time for us to reflect on how all of us can
play a part in enhancing the lives of children in foster care -- a need that is
even greater today. Help as we support hundreds of children in foster care and advocate
for solutions that benefit thousands more DC children. [[link removed]]
