John,
This is a far different Mother's Day than any of us have experienced before, and my heart goes out to all the mothers out there who are balancing all the challenges of these times. They are caring for their families, homeschooling their children, working hard to provide for their households, and doing everything they can to stay healthy during this public health crisis. And to those who are on the frontline, whether as healthcare workers, grocery store clerks, first responders, public transit workers, I am deeply grateful for your sacrifice to take care of the rest of us.
I'm also thinking a lot about my own mom - who passed away over 18 years ago - about what she taught me, and of how her values carry on in our family. She was a social worker who, as director of a senior center, initiated their Meals on Wheels program. I’d often accompany her after school for those deliveries, and it was through those experiences with her that I began to see the tremendous impact even the smallest acts of service can have on another person. I still remember all the faces that lit up and the shared comfort of holding folks’ hands as they told me their incredible stories.
The empathy my mother instilled in me has guided me through all stages of my life as I've strived to always care for and help others. I think of her every single day and remind myself that acts of kindness and compassion, big or small, can profoundly impact others’ lives. We must all remember that, especially during times like these.
I'm sure many of you have been shaped by your mothers as I was. If you can, I hope you can call them today and tell them how much they mean to you. Staying connected - in whatever way is possible and safe - is more important than ever.
There are so many incredible women in my life that further embody my mother’s spirit, and they are all precious blessings. Today, I'm so grateful for them, and especially for the time I had with my mother and for all the lessons she taught me.
I will continue to try my best to follow the amazing example you set, Ma. I love and miss you so very much. XO
Happy Mother’s Day to all of my fellow moms. Take care and be well.
With love,
Hiral
