John,
In recent days, more and more people are finally calling Donald Trump what he is: a fascist.
Kamala Harris, General Mark Milley, and even The New York Times are using the term to describe the growing threat Trump poses to our democracy. After years of hesitation, apparently, the reality is now too glaring to ignore.
The shift comes in response to Trump’s latest threats to use the military against what he calls “the enemy within”— anyone who disagrees with him or works to protect our elections.
Trump’s repeated rhetoric about turning the military on his political opponents is a clear warning of the authoritarian path he’s prepared to take.
But while many are (finally) waking up to the danger, the Wall Street Journal—owned by Rupert Murdoch—has dismissed the fascism label as nothing more than a “meme.” According to them, the public won’t accept it, because in their eyes, the real “fascists” are Democrats who want to use the government to actually solve problems.
The Wall Street Journal’s attempt to save Trump from the media storm against him is laughable. The paper dismisses the fascism allegations by claiming that Trump was a “deregulator” for most of his term, even arguing that the most fascist thing Trump attempted to do was build the border wall.
The paper claimed this is small potatoes compared to President Biden’s student loan forgiveness plan and the Democrats’ “culture war.” WSJ even alleged that Democrats have used fascism in an attempt to beat Trump by prosecuting him for his actions.
The Wall Street Journal mostly ignored Trump’s most authoritarian moments, like his refusal to accept the results of the 2020 election that ended with the attacks on the Capitol on January 6. Or his threats to jail or use military force on his current and past political enemies, including Hillary Clinton, Chuck Schumer, Liz Cheney, and the press.
The Wall Street Journal says these are not relevant because “checks and balances” have previously prevented Trump from following through on his promises – something that would be impossible if Trump is able to follow through on his threats to only appoint trusted allies to government positions.
John, the folks at the Wall Street Journal aren’t stupid. They want to give themselves and their readers a justification to vote for Trump, and they’re willing to do all sorts of mental gymnastics to do it.
But we can't let that go unanswered.
Here at COURIER, we’ve been honest about Trump from the beginning. And while we’re glad most of the legacy media are on board now, we know that’s not enough. Right-wing rags like The Wall Street Journal shouldn’t be allowed to pretend they’re unbiased, and they should be taken to task for spreading Trump talking points.
