Welcome to another edition of FT Now! We hope your weekend is off to a
good start. Now for the news: Republican governors are receiving high
marks for their work in ushering their states into recovery mode. You
know who's NOT receiving high marks? Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer
(surprise, surprise). In Montana, Democrat gubernatorial candidate
Whitney Williams scored an endorsement that could turn out to be the
kiss of death for her campaign. Read below for more!

GOP Governors Receive Higher Grades Than Democrats In Report Card on
States' Reopening

What Happened:

In a report card published this week by the Committee To Unleash
Prosperity, nine states - eight of them run by GOP governors - received
an "A" on reopening their economies. Those eight states? Florida,
Georgia, Iowa, Nebraska, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Tennessee, and Wyoming.

Why You Should Care:

These governors have taken on the impossible task of weighing the health
and safety of their citizens, and the strength of stability of state and
local economies. It's a delicate balancing act that not every elected
official has mastered.

What Happens Next:

Watch these states set the example for how to re-open and lead the
country's economic comeback.

Governor Gretchen Whitmer Has Played Politics While Issuing "Excessive
Decrees" in "A Stunning Power Grab"

What Happened:

The reviews are in for Democrat Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer's
handling of the COVID-19 crisis, and...they're not pretty. She's
being accused of going into 'lockdown overkill," issuing "vague and
arbitrary" orders, and perpetrating a "stunning power grab."

Why You Should Care:

How your governor handles this crisis directly impacts your life, and
some are doing better than others (see above). Does it really make sense
that in Michigan, you can buy a lottery ticket but not a can of paint?

What Happens Next:

Whitmer has a lot of explaining to do. Maybe if she takes a break from
campaigning to be Joe Biden's running mate she can do that...

Montana Democrat Whitney Williams Scores Coveted Hillary Clinton
Endorsement

What Happened:

For those who don't know, Whitney Williams is running against Montana
Lt. Governor Mike Cooney for the Democratic nomination for governor.
This week, Williams landed a prized endorsement from her former boss -
Hillary Clinton.

Why You Should Care:

The Montana gubernatorial race is one to watch this year. But
Williams' big score this week is odd given Hillary lost Montana by
more than 20 points in 2016. So what exactly is Williams trying to
convey to voters? That she's just as wrong for Montana as Hillary was?

What Happens Next:

Looks like the Williams campaign could be in freefall mode. We'll see
what happens next!
