With less than four weeks until Election Day, several potential "October Surprises" have emerged—most notably, explosive new documents from Trump’s January 6th indictment.

The documents reveal eye-witness testimony that Trump, when informed his supporters were threatening to hang Mike Pence, responded with, "so what." This devastating revelation adds to the evidence suggesting Trump aided and abetted a coup attempt.

Yet a Media Matters study shows that major newspapers are barely covering the story, publishing just 26 articles in the week after the filing. By contrast, those same papers ran 100 stories on the Clinton email "scandal" in a similar timeframe in 2016.

That’s more than four times the coverage, John.

We all remember the 2016 election when James Comey's letter about additional Clinton emails led to 46 front-page stories in just one week.

Clinton was never charged, but as data guru Nate Silver noted, the media’s fixation "probably cost Clinton the election."

Now, eight years later, Trump’s federal indictment—backed by overwhelming evidence of his role in an attempted coup—barely gets a mention.

None of the newspapers examined by Media Matters ran even half as many stories on Trump’s indictment as they did on Clinton’s emails. At best, it’s an absurd overcorrection; at worst, it’s a complete dereliction of duty by the legacy press—especially at a moment when the foundation of our democracy is at stake.

COURIER exists to hold the media accountable for enabling Trump’s attacks on democracy. Our reporters are working tirelessly in eleven battleground states to ensure voters get the facts before they head to the polls on Election Day.
