Dear Reader,
Weird, weird times for all. On my end, I decided to quarantine with my family in Wichita and that has me feeling like I'm both 13-years-old again and nearing 65 with a tip-top hip. (Or maybe that's just what turning 29 usually feels like?)
Living with my parents and having my three siblings around the house means that, for me, it's pretty much 2004 again. "Mom, what's for dinner?" And "Can you buy cookies next time you go to the store?" (I'm the worst.) Working from my parents' kitchen table feels like I'm once again doing homework, except this time with my own laptop and occasionally having to hide from my toddler nephew and niece to conduct phone interviews.
I'm aware my experience in this pandemic is categorically quaint, having family time, economic stability and healthy loved ones. But I've become consumed with the awareness that this reality is fragile.
Even though I've been at NCR and GSR for five years, now more than ever I've found myself depending on our coverage. As a news junkie, I'd usually read a well-researched article over a spiritual column, but that's no longer the case: I crave perspective and wisdom. (If people tend to develop a deeper appreciation for religion in old age, this feels a little ahead of schedule.)
My reporting on Nuns and Nones ended up being less an assignment and more a personal crash course on tackling the big questions. Their reflections on pain, transformation and larger views of time have profoundly influenced me, driving me to scour NCR and GSR for related writing. We've always written about this stuff, so why did I never appreciate it before?
With everyone finding themselves in the unpredictable, asking for money right now might seem less than ideal.
