** Ruth's Abortion Experience
------------------------------------------------------------

A heartbreaking story that completely undermines the Government's

sanitised presentation of the new abortion regime.

Ruth O'Sullivan, a nurse from West Cork and married with a young family, recently made the very courageous decision to come forward and tell her deeply personal and harrowing story about the impact of abortion on her life. Ruth will share her heartbreaking story at next weekend’s conference.

Other guest speakers include: Leader of Independent Ireland Michael Collins TD, Councillor Sarah Beasley, the newly elected AontĂş representative on Limerick City Council, and Dr Margaret Naughton, University Hospital Kerry.

The focus of this year's conference will be on increasing pro-life representation in the Oireachtas and the ongoing fight for the changes needed to reduce Ireland's soaring abortion rate.

** Newspaper profiles Community Connect's outstanding work
------------------------------------------------------------

On Wednesday, the Irish Independent ran a positive full-page feature on Community Connect, the life-affirming charity that provides practical support to pregnant women and new parents in need.

Feature writer Anne-Marie Walsh spoke to one young mother who warmly praised the charity for the support she received when faced with an unplanned pregnancy, where some people close to her wanted her to have an abortion. She described the shock of realising she was pregnant and how Community Connect was there for her at that critically important moment of her life.

The feature is worth reading in full. Fair play to the Independent for publishing the piece and congrats to Community Connect ([link removed]) for all the fabulous work they are doing!

** Couple settles high court case over claim they would have aborted baby had they known child suffered congenital condition
------------------------------------------------------------

A couple who initiated a high court case against the HSE have recently settled the settlement for a “substantial sum”. The couple claim that they were not informed that during the woman’s pregnancy their child suffered from a congenital condition, and if they were made aware of this they would have chosen to terminate the pregnancy.

The details of the case are unsettling and point to the cheapening of human life which has arisen since the introduction of legal, regulated abortion from January 2019. It is disturbing that the child at the centre of the case may grow up and learn that their parents felt so strongly that the pregnancy should’ve ended in abortion that they brought this high-level case against the HSE. Whilst the situation is undoubtedly a difficult one, the overarching post-2019 devaluation of human life which has seen a rapidly climbing annual abortion rate in Ireland is deeply regrettable.

** Pro Life Campaign welcomes aspects of Budget 2025
------------------------------------------------------------

The Pro Life Campaign, in its pre-budget submission, called for the government to radically rethink the social welfare system to reorient it towards a firmly pro-family policy to ensure that women in unplanned pregnancies, new families, and all women expecting children no matter their circumstances should never have to feel that they have “no choice” but to proceed with an abortion. This has been done in countries like Hungary, which has tallied with an annual fall in the abortion rate. By contrast, Ireland’s abortion rate continues to climb dramatically annually with in excess of 10,000 abortions being recorded in 2023. Regrettably, the government has not taken any proactive steps to ensure that pregnant women who might seek an abortion receive adequate information on alternatives to abortion, such as supports and adoption services information.

Whilst the government’s newly released Budget 2025 still falls short of the kind of fundamental reforms which we believe are necessary, there is much to be welcomed. Specifically, the below proposals are worthy of praise:
* An increase in the maximum rate of Maternity Benefit, Adoptive Benefit, Paternity Benefit and Parent’s Benefit by €15.
* The increases in the rate of payment for the former Increase for a Qualified Child (IQC) which has been renamed the Child Support Payment.
* A Newborn Baby Grant of €280 will be provided for children born on or after December 1, 2024, along with the first month’s Child Benefit payment of €140.
* A one-time double payment of Child Benefit (November 2024), amounting to €280 per child, will be issued. Additionally, another one-time double payment of Child Benefit will be given in December 2024.

The introduction of the Newborn Baby Grant of €420 is particularly welcome. This payment will be a significant boost for parents and eases the costs of expecting a new baby.

The Pro Life Campaign will continue to advocate for more significant and fundamental changes to the existing social welfare system in order to advance implicitly pro-life socio-economic policies.
