I’m so angry, my blood is boiling.
Earlier this year, terrible news broke that several individuals in my state of Mississippi, including a state official, embezzled millions of dollars from a welfare program meant to help our most vulnerable.
That program, the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) program, helps families with low incomes by providing direct assistance, education, and job training. But over recent years, less than 2% of Mississippi’s TANF applicants received the money. And the state denied thousands more.
We’re now finding out more details about how that money was spent, and it’s even worse than we thought. The conspirators stole a whopping $94 million in taxpayer dollars and spent it on things like cars, lobbyists, cell phones, and more.
Unfortunately the corruption doesn’t stop there. We also learned that a key player at the center of this conspiracy is a big-time GOP donor who gave $3,500 in campaign contributions to my far-right opponent, Cindy Hyde-Smith.
Enough is enough. We deserve answers and accountability. So today, I’m calling on Hyde-Smith to immediately refund the tainted campaign contributions and demand a federal investigation into the crucial TANF program.
