Despite warnings, Texas rushed to remove millions from Medicaid. Eligible residents suffered.

Texas has stripped Medicaid coverage from 2 million people, most of them children. ProPublica and The Texas Tribune found that disenrollment mistakes during the “unwinding” after the COVID-19 public health emergency were preventable and foreshadowed by warnings from the federal government, whistleblowers and advocates.

Climate maps show a transformed United States  

A ProPublica map shows how the suitable climate zone will move northward by 2070.

As the toll of Hurricane Helene’s destruction becomes clearer, reporter Abrahm Lustgarten asks, “Who will care for Americans left behind by climate migration?” The question is an extension of a 2020 project exploring a warming planet and a shifting population. As part of that investigation, ProPublica and The New York Times Magazine analyzed data showing how warming temperatures, rising seas and changing rainfall will profoundly reshape the way people have lived in North America for centuries.
