People shouldn’t have to choose between paying their bills and avoiding coronavirus, but that’s exactly what’s happening. If we want to save tens of thousands of people from catching COVID19, people need money NOW. And Congress has to make it happen.
No matter what Trump says, it’s not safe to go to work right now. That’s why there are more than 30 million new unemployed people: most local governments don’t want their citizens to die from COVID19 just to make money for their bosses. And millions of people who are still working right now understand that they are at risk for infection, but if they want to stay in their homes with food on the table, they don’t have a choice.
Until we get universal testing and contact tracking available, we need an alternative to risking our lives on the job site so that people don’t have to choose between starving on one hand and needing a ventilator on the other.
As we explain in ournewest video, getting this emergency cash to people is a critical part of a People’s Bailout that can get us through this pandemic and put us on a just path to recovery.
