WHAT'S HAPPENING

GOV. LUJAN GRISHAM LOCKS DOWN GALLUP

At the outgoing mayor's request, Gov. Lujan Grisham agreed to lock down the city of Gallup, closing roads so people cannot leave the community. The move comes because COVID-19 deaths and the number of cases are extremely high in that community compared to the rest of the state. The action aims to control the spread of the virus. Businesses and others say they got virtually no warning when this crackdown happened, and this move makes little sense because people can leave, making others vulnerable to COVID-19 in neighboring towns. On top of that, Gallup businesses will suffer because people will go to other communities to shop. The lockdown is in effect until at least Thursday.

GRANTS BUSINESS FINED $60,000 DESPITE PRACTICING SOCIAL DISTANCING

State health officials have fined the owner of Papas Pawn & Gun, a small business in Grants, NM, $60,000. Diane Rowe says law enforcement officers are among those who make purchases in her shop, and she believes her rights were violated as she remained open so her livelihood wouldn't go under. Rowe took meticulous health precautions, enforced social distancing and ensured her shop never had more than two customers inside.

"On Monday, six or seven State Police officers surrounded my small shop, and it was really upsetting," said Rowe. "That was a total show of force. They came to give me a court summons, treated me like I was a criminal, not a shop owner. Later I got a notice from the State that I was being fined $60,000. My husband is a veteran who is disabled and we don't have any employees. This fine will kill us. It's the end. I don't know what to do."

Local communities and owners must have a stronger voice to decide when establishments can reopen, and all must be treated with fairness and equity. The governor's order has led to threats and intimidation. There's no reason why small businesses cannot open while the big box stores continue to thrive.

Chairman Pearce is asking for a call to action to tell the governor to stop these discriminatory and unfair policies.

GOVERNOR RELAXES SOME PUBLIC HEALTH ORDER RESTRICTIONS
This past week, Gov. Lujan Grisham changed her public health order, relaxing some of her restrictions. Still, non-essential stores remain closed except for curbside or delivery services. Child care may now be extended to people operating non-essential businesses. Gun stores can only serve customers by appointment. A handful of operations, like pet services, were allowed to open.

Again, this is unacceptable. There is no equity of treatment for our businesses. The governor continues to favor national chains over the little guy--locally owned mom-and-pop stores-- that drive the state's economy. She must understand that small businesses can operate safely with the same health precautions as the big box stores. She cannot discriminate.

Bridget Condon
Senate District 9

I was born and raised in New Mexico, and have always worked on behalf of the citizens, communities, and businesses of our state.

In my current job, it is my role to help our existing businesses in Sandoval County thrive and expand, and likewise I am tasked with recruiting new companies to our communities. Time and time again, however, I am told by companies and their consultants that they will never even get to the point of looking at communities like Corrales, Bernalillo, or Rio Rancho because our state level antics and anti-business policies rule New Mexico out of consideration completely.

I am tired of companies ruling out New Mexico as a place to do business; I am tired of our citizens ruling out New Mexico as a place to start their career and families because of the lack of opportunity; and I am tired of common sense being ruled out at the decision-making happening in the Roundhouse.

I hope you will support me and send the first woman to represent Senate District 9 to make choices that keep jobs in New Mexico, help our citizens prosper, and represent the values of our unique communities.

John Clark
Senate District 9

John, born in Nashville TN, comes from a lineage of Publishers & Architects who were instrumental in defining and building our nation since the late 1700’s. As a child, John’s parents and grandparents instilled in him a strong work ethic and a respect for our nation and the people who worked hard to pave the path for freedom so that all citizens could live the American Dream and enjoy the great Republic that it is. John’s father served our country as a pilot in WWII, and his grandparents, co-owners of the Nashville Banner, imparted knowledge about what makes respectable news and politics, while his father’s dad taught him about what it takes to build and develop city structures that would stand the test of time. John understands that if you don’t take care of where you live, where you live won’t take care of you.

Karin Foster
District: Senate District 20

I am a mother of two future leaders, an attorney and small business owner. I currently own a small boutique lawfirm specializing in estate and business succession planning.

I was the attorney and advocate for the Independent Petroleum Association of New Mexico representing industry in Santa Fe for nearly 13 years; I was also the lead advocate for the NM Brewers Guild, the National Federation of Independent Businesses (NFIB) and the Foundation for Open Government. With all the years I spent in Santa Fe at the NM Legislature, I feel that I have the perfect background and experience to represent Senate District 20 on the broad range of issues legislators face in Santa Fe including fixing out significant budget problems.

John C. Morton

New Mexico Senate District 20

John C. Morton is a retired Major in the United States Air Force Reserves. During the majority of his military career, John served as an Air Force Intelligence Officer providing critical intelligence to senior level decision makers. In addition, John served in support of Counter Drug Operations with several federal law enforcement agencies fighting the drug threat in our communities.

John has spent years talking to New Mexicans about the important issues facing our state.
He believes that everyone in New Mexico deserves to live in safe neighborhoods without the fear of violent criminals roaming our communities. As your State Senator, John will work to enact stricter penalties for violent offenders to Stop the Revolving Door of “Catch and Release.” John will work to end Sanctuary Cities and Counties and hold those responsible for sheltering illegal immigrants who commit violent crimes.

John wants to improve New Mexico education to make our children more successful by providing vocational education to the level of apprenticeship certification at graduation for all New Mexico High School Students to make them “job ready” upon graduation. This will help to reduce dropout rates, attract industry, and make students self-reliant.

In addition, John wants to make New Mexico a more prosperous state to live, work and raise a family by making New Mexico a business-friendly state by eliminating burdensome regulations, eliminating wasteful spending, implementing a “Tax Payers Bill of Rights” and eliminating corporate taxes to incentivize corporations to do business in New Mexico.
