Doctors Without Borders
During the past three months, the novel coronavirus has exploded into a global pandemic. Doctors Without Borders has been there since the beginning.
Late January: Our first COVID-19 response team is dispatched to Hong Kong, focusing on health education for vulnerable groups.
February: Doctors Without Borders sends 3.5 metric tons of medical protective equipment to Wuhan Jinyintan Hospital and 1 metric ton of personal protective equipment to Hong Kong St. John Ambulance service.
Early March: We call for immediate evacuation of people trapped in squalid camps at entry points for asylum seekers and refugees on the Greek islands. Our medical teams begin supporting four hospitals in Italy.
Late March: Our response expands across Europe to Spain, Switzerland, France, Norway, and Belgium. The first COVID-19 case is confirmed in Syria–and teams scale up infection control measures. We call for no patents or profiteering on drugs, tests, or vaccines used in the novel coronavirus pandemic.
April: We launch our response in the United States, working with partner organizations to care for those experiencing homelessness and housing insecurity in New York City and exploring options in other communities lacking equitable access to COVID-19 response services, including Puerto Rico and Native American communities in the Southwest.
Now: Doctors Without Borders is responding directly to the novel coronavirus pandemic in the more than 70 countries where we run existing programs, while opening projects in new countries as they become outbreak hotspots.
