Dear Friends,
In case you missed it — our Mayor recently had a conversation with The Washington Post's Robert Costa, a national political reporter who is covering government response efforts to COVID-19.
As part of his "Leadership During Crisis" series about the response to the pandemic nationwide, LaToya gave a lot of interesting insight on many things New Orleans is doing to battle this pandemic:
- "From the beginning, we've acted swiftly — not only ending large gatherings but even putting in our stay-at-home mandate. We ramped up testing very quickly and were able to stand up the pilot program that the federal government created in a matter of three days. We tested hundreds of our people. And with our top-notch healthcare leaders and partners throughout the city, we have been testing at a rate faster than the federal government. We have moved into mobile testing at hotspots that we identified in our city, five different areas. One of these areas last week tested over 884 people."
- "Based on the data that we look at daily, it is safe to say that we are flattening the curve and have made tremendous progress — in fact, this past Monday, we saw the first day in over a month with no coronavirus-related deaths."
- "As for reopening businesses and public spaces, we will be putting together a reopening committee. We will be working with industry leaders to come up with the best protocols, processes, and guidelines that are of course aligned with that of the state and federal government."
